KeyACCIDENT Search: Alternative search for bend collisions with loss of manoeuvres 16 & 17

Issue

The 2024 STATS19 Review has removed manoeuvres 16 Going ahead left hand bend and 17 Going ahead right hand bend.

We manage a rural road network. How do I now search for collisions at rural bends?

Solution

Whilst not guaranteed to isolate every collision occurring at a bend, the fields Vehicle fields Veering Left and Veering Right can be used as an alternative.

For example:

Collision Year BETWEEN 2022 AND 2025
Junction Detail = Not within 20m
(
Veering Left = Yes
OR
Veering Right = Yes
)

Notes

1. Veering Left and Veering Right use the recorded compass points where they are not straight ahead, such as in N to S, or SW to NE, etc.

2. Veering Left and Veering Right will detect junction manoeuvres Turning Left, Waiting to Turn Left, Turning Right, and Waiting to Turn Right unless junctions are excluded.

3. Brackets are required to ensure everything after OR is subject to the same conditions.

4. To limit this to the classic definition of rural roads being speed limits of 50 mph or higher, you can add the line:

Speed Limit >= 50

5. If necessary, dual carriageways can be excluded by adding the line:

Road Type <> Dual Carriageway

For example:

Collision Year BETWEEN 2022 AND 2025
Junction Detail = Not within 20m
Speed Limit >= 50
Road Type <> Dual c’way
(
Veering Left = Yes
OR
Veering Right = Yes
)
