KeyACCIDENT Data: Export file encryption

Issue

Are KeyACCIDENT export files encrypted?

Solution

With KeyACCIDENT version 2025 and later, files exported in the KAML format are encrypted as default.

KAML sounds like “camel”

An unencrypted export KAML option can be selected if allowed by a KeyACCIDENT administrator

By default, this option is disabled

Even with this option enabled, export files will default to encrypted – it needs a manual selection to save as an unencrypted export file

Notes:

  • KAML is KeyACCIDENT’s own data format and is based on XML
  • KAML files produced in earlier KeyACCIDENT version are not encrypted
  • All KAML files are now compressed
  • KeyACCIDENT 2025 onwards will import the following KeyACCIDENT file types automatically:
    • Encrypted KAML files
    • Unencrypted KAML files
    • Legacy v7 unencrypted KAML or KAMZ files

1. Creating an encrypted KAML export file

  • Search data as usual
  • Export
  • Select KAML format
  • Save as file KeyACCIDENT Encrypted XML (.kaml), which is the default

2. Creating an unencrypted KAML export file

Only possible if this option is enabled by a KeyACCIDENT administrator

  • Search data as usual
  • Export
  • Select KAML format
  • Use dropdown to save as file KeyACCIDENT Unencrypted XML (.kaml)

3. Enabling/disabling unencrypted KAML export files

Only a KeyACCIDENT administrator can enable/disable the option to allow unencrypted KeyACCIDENT KAML exports (disabled by default)

  • In the Database module, Tools ribbon, select Options
  • Tick Allow unencrypted KeyACCIDENT exports to allow the option to export KAML files as unencrypted

  • Untick the box to revert to only allowing encrypted KAML export files

What about encrypting other export formats?

Until providers of other software support encryption, only KeyACCIDENT export KAML files can be encrypted

We will liaise with the Department for Transport and software providers that decide to enable encrypted import/exports
